Unrestricted Gifts

Unrestricted cash donations will be used at the discretion of LifeRing Canada for its highest priority. This is the most common (and flexible) type of financial support LifeRing receives. Cash and donations by cheque or credit card are accepted. Go to Canada Helps to give instantly.

Tributes and Memorial Gifts

At times of loss or celebration of a loved one’s life, or to recognize an important sobriety milestone, you or your family may request that tribute or memorial donations be made to support the work of LifeRing Canada. Upon receipt of such gifts, we will send a charitable donation receipt to the donor and an acknowledgement, recognizing the donor, to the bereaved family or honouree.

Matching Gifts

More and more companies are encouraging their employees to support family-oriented charities by offering to match employees’ gifts to an eligible institution, and in some instances to provide double the amount of the original gift. Check with your company’s human resources department to find out about its donation-matching guidelines.

Gifts of Securities

The Canada Revenue Agency has eliminated taxes Canadians used to have to pay when they donated appreciated securities (including stocks, bonds and mutual funds) directly to a registered charity. If you own publicly traded securities that have increased in value and you decide to transfer them, none of the capital gain is taxable, and you will receive a tax receipt for the value of the shares at the close of business on the day they are received into LifeRing Canada’s brokerage account. Securities are appreciated, whether they are given today or through a planned gift such as a bequest.

Designated Gifts

If your heart is touched by one particular aspect of our work, you may wish to specify that your contribution be directed accordingly. We will be pleased to direct your gift in accordance with the terms of our Stewarship Policy.

Endowments

Funds are frequently donated to create an endowment (income that is intended to be used to support any priority that LifeRing Canada or the donor establishes). To establish an endowment, a gift of $10,000 or more is suggested.

Planned Gifts

Remembering LifeRing Canada in your will is one of the simplest ways to ensure your continued support of our work with families. A bequest may be used to assist in whatever areas need financial support, be directed to a service or program of your choice or be left as an endowment. You should discuss any provision in your will with your lawyer, and when the will is finalized, LifeRing Canada should be notified.

Other planned gifts include the purchase of an annuity for which LifeRing Canada is designated as the owner, or notice of the establishment of a major irrevocable “charitable remainder” trust. The Manager of Communication and Fund Development at LifeRing would be pleased to explain the procedures by which any of these planned gifts can be arranged.

Gifts in Kind

A gift-in-kind is the gift of tangible property that is of value to LifeRing Canada. For gifts of value less than a certain amount, LifeRing Canada may issue an immediate charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the donation. For gifts of a greater value, special government appraisal guidelines must be followed. Gifts-in-kind to LifeRing Canada could include gifts of marketable securities, land, buildings, valuable artworks or vehicles.

If you would like to make a donation of any kind or just discuss the options, email John Banks at banks.moss@gmail.com.
